Ultraviolet Phototherapy (UVB)

Sunlight or heliotherapy has been used for centuries to treat skin conditions as the UVB light within it suppresses the overactive immune cells in the skin, helping to resume normal skin cell activity. Narrowband ultraviolet treatment (also known as TLO-1) replicates the specific wavelength of UVB light found in sunlight. It therefore produces the same physiological effects on skin cell activity allowing us to successfully treat a variety of skin conditions.

Typically you will be referred by your Dermatologist, if you have an extensive skin problem and have tried ointments and creams with little success, or if your Dermatologist wishes you to use UVB as a combination treatment. At your appointment you will be assessed by an experienced clinician. They will explain the treatment process and possible implications of treatment in greater detail. Depending on your condition you will either need to come in 2 or 3 times a week over a 6 - 8 week period.

Narrowband UVB has the advantage of fewer adverse effects compared to other treatments, particularly that you do not need to take oral medication, it is safe during pregnancy and breast feeding and there is no need for eye protection following treatment.
