About our Physiotherapy Department

At London Bridge Hospital, our physiotherapists provide evidence-based treatment to support both inpatients and outpatients. Our team are Chartered and HCPC-registered, and just like our consultants, each one is an expert in their respective field with advanced subspecialised training that can range from cancer rehabilitation to women's and men's health.

The team deliver a full spectrum of physiotherapy services – supporting each inpatient throughout their journey: from pre and post-surgery to outpatient care, as well as supporting clients with any non-surgical musculoskeletal condition. Whether staying at our hospital or attending our outpatient centre at The Shard, patients can expect a personalised, goal driven programme to improve joint and muscle function, strengthen and rehabilitate.

  • Women’s Health icon plus

Our specialist Women’s Health physiotherapists are trained to treat a range of gynaecological, obstetric and colorectal conditions. This includes pelvic girdle pain (PGP), back pain during pregnancy, diastasis recti, incontinence – stress and urge, overactive bladder symptoms, pelvic organ prolapse, constipation, pain during intercourse and return to exercise following childbirth or surgery.
  • Men’s Health icon plus

Our physiotherapists can help with a variety of problems related to incontinence, overactive bladder symptoms, pelvic pain, erectile dysfunction and bowel related issues. We offer treatments that include bladder and pelvic floor muscle re-training, manual therapy, and rehabilitation following prostate surgery.
  • Cancer rehabilitation icon plus

Research has supported the benefits of physiotherapy and exercise in helping to reduce side effects of cancer treatments and to help get patients back to their normal activities. Physiotherapy forms an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, with treatments such as therapeutic exercise programmes, myofascial release, manual lymphatic drainage, acupuncture and breathing exercises.

  • Respiratory icon plus

Occasionally due to illness or disease, we can develop breathing difficulties following Covid-19 managing secretions within our lungs or lose the ability to have a normal breathing pattern. Respiratory physiotherapy aims to optimise lung function and help regulate our breathing pattern. It can support hyperventilation, asthma, pulmonary and cardiac disorders, and after thoracic or cardiac surgery.
  • Neurological physiotherapy icon plus

Neurological physiotherapy can be beneficial for many new and more longstanding neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.  It can also benefit patients following neurological injury or surgery. We provide a comprehensive and individualised assessment which allows us to tailor the treatment to work towards achieving the patient’s goals.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation icon plus

Damage to the inner ear can result in inaccurate information being provided to the brain. This can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, motion sensitivity, nausea, vomiting and difficulty with vision, all of which result in challenges with balance and walking. Vestibular rehabilitation is an evidence-based treatment, which aims to minimise symptoms and maximise function. Treatment techniques include the Epley manoeuvre.
  • Running MOT icon plus

We offer a comprehensive running assessment, to look at foot strike, cadence and relevant asymmetries, analysing where improvements can be made for runners of all levels and ability. Following the assessment, we’re able to offer an exercise and training plan helping the individual to make the adjustments safely and effectively.

  • Cycling MOT icon plus

Cyclists are prone to overuse injury due to the repetitive nature of cycling. Common issues include neck, back and knee pain as well as iliotibial band problems, which can all be caused by factors such as posture, bike fit, riding style, saddle position, pedaling mechanics and gears. During a physio-led cyclist MOT patients will have a sports injury specialist, bike fitter and experienced cyclist all rolled into one to optimise their bike set up.
  • Pilates icon plus

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on posture, strength, flexibility and endurance. It works out the entire body, putting emphasis on our mind and body connection. It concentrates on alignment, breathing and core control. At The Shard we currently offer one-to-one Pilates sessions. This can combine a mixture of both mat based and machine based exercises.
  • UVB / Phototherapy icon plus

Ultraviolet (UVB) light can be used to successfully treat a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, and acne. A patient can be referred by a dermatologist to use UVB as a combination treatment together with ointments and creams.

Inpatient physiotherapy in collaboration with consultants

Should a patient require physiotherapy during their hospital stay, our therapists work closely with consultants and attend multidisciplinary team meetings. They gain an in-depth picture of each patient’s procedure and condition, and can tailor their treatment plan precisely. This collaboration creates the best immediate and long-term results.  A patient’s programme can then seamlessly continue from the hospital to our outpatient physiotherapy department at The Shard, or with clear instructions for their recovery once home. Continuity of care is fundamental to our service.

If recovery isn’t progressing as expected or a condition would benefit from further investigation, we’re able to refer to the most appropriate specialist quickly.

Occupational therapy

Our team of occupational therapists provide specialist assessment and intervention for patients in pain, following neurological injury, and at all stages of cancer treatment.  The aim is to keep patients doing what’s important to them - from moving freely and independently, sleeping, thinking clearly, working, and engaging in a full and active social life. This includes providing relevant equipment and linking in with community teams where appropriate.

Our Occupational Therapy team also provide services for outpatients at The Shard, aiming to help manage and alleviate symptoms with techniques such as fatigue management, sleep optimisation strategies, peripheral neuropathy programmes, cognitive rehab, and return to work programmes.

Our extended Rehabilitation Programme

For patients needing a little more support, in order to make the transition from hospital to home as smooth as possible we offer a flexible, physiotherapy led rehabilitation programme. Patients are able to extend their stay in hospital, or stay in a luxury hotel in or near The Shard. This can provide the extra support and time needed to return to daily activities with confidence. Especially useful for patients who have undergone spinal or lower limb procedures, the rehabilitation programme provides an enhanced course of bespoke physiotherapy, led by the same specialist whose care they were under during their inpatient stay.
